The PINTABIAN is a horse that must be verified as having 99% or more purebred Arabian blood, with a tobiano coat pattern. Pintabians are bred for their beauty, intelligence, disposition, stamina, and are very versatile. They have a short dished head, that is wide-set between large eyes, long arched neck, short back, level hip, and high tail carriage.

It is common misconception that the "Pintabian" (pin-TAY-bee-an) horse is simply a cross between an Arabian and a spotted horse of Pinto or Paint breeding. This, however, is not the case, because of its dominant characteristics, experts in the field of genetics have known for years that it is possible to breed the popular tobiano spotting pattern into the Arabian breed to produce a "relatively pure" strain of tobiano horses with over 99% Arabian blood (also known as the Pintabian!). As you may already know, the purebred Arabian horse does not come in the tobiano pattern. Also, because of the genetic make-up of the tobiano gene, at least one parent must be a tobiano in order to produce a horse with tobiano markings. The Pintabian breed was developed by continually crossing tobianos back to purebred Arabians, and in order to be eligible for registration in the Pintabian Horse Registry, horses must be over 99% Arabian in blood. It is because of this high degree of Arabian blood that the Arabian "type" of the Pintabian horse breeds true.

To quickly determine the amount of Arabian blood, add the blood percent of the stallion to the percent of Arabian blood in the mare and divide by two. This manipulation of blood factoring differentiates the Pintabian from the other colored horse registries.

One parent must be of 100% Arabian blood and the other parent a spotted horse to be of 98.4375% (Pintabian Producer) or higher Arabian bloodlines. This combination produces a Pintabian foal, colored or not, in the Arabian Horse Association(USA) and Canadian Arabian Horse Registry as a half-arab, (the UK AHS will register all Pintabians as part-breds showing their true arabian %) all the while keeping track of the Arabian blood percentage by the Notation on the AHA papers (see chart below).This chart may help you determine the percentage of Arabian blood.

1/2 Arabian=50% Arabian blood, noted by "1A plus #" on AHA reg. papers (USA).

3/4 Arabian=75% Arabian blood, noted by "2A plus #"

7/8 Arabian=87.5% Arabian, noted by "3A plus #"

15/16 Arabian=93.75% Arabian, noted by "4A plus #"

31/32 Arabian=96.875% Arabian, noted by "5A plus #"

63/64 Arabian=98.4375% Arabian, noted by "6A plus #"

127/128 Arabian= 99.21875% Arabian, noted by "7A plus #" (results in a Pintabian).

When two Pintabians are crossed with each other, the resulting foal still carries over 99% Arabian blood. Pintabian foals without the desired tobiano markings are eligible for registration as breeding stock, as they are still over 99% Arabian. Purebred Arabians may be registered as outcross horses to allow for additional bloodlines.

This division is for PINTABIANS, these are horses that carry the desired tobiano coat pattern and are over 99% arabian in blood. To qualify for registration in this division at least one parent must be a tobiano.

Horses in this division are again over 99% Arabian in blood but do not carry the desired tobiano markings, in other words they are a solid colour. Horses registered in this division are capable of producing Pintabians when bred to a horse in the Coloured Division.

Pure bred arabs can be registered in this division and they are used to increase the gene pool and will increase the arabian blood % of a pintabian horse. They are generally solid in colour but may possess overo markings or characteristics. Arabian horses are capable of producing Pintabians when bred to horses in the Coloured Division.
